Free consultation. You pay nothing unless we win.
We opened a second Rockford office downtown for a simple reason. A lot of the people who call us after a crash live on the west side, the south side, or right here in the center of town, and our Weaver Road office is a long haul from Kishwaukee Street or South Main. Now there’s an office a block from the courthouse where you can sit down with Paul Marriett and talk through what happened, usually the same day you call.
Where We Are
1 Court Place is the three-story office building on North Court Street, just north of West State Street. If you’ve been to the Winnebago County Courthouse at 400 W. State, we’re across the street and a short walk up the block. Suite 100B is on the ground floor.
Getting here
- From the west side. West State Street (Business 20) brings you straight in. Court Street is two blocks before the river; turn left.
- From the south side. South Main Street (Route 2) runs north into downtown. Turn right on West State, then left on Court.
- From I-39/90 or US-20. Take US-20 west to the Route 2 / South Main exit, head north on Main, and turn right on West State.
- From the Weaver Road office or the east side. East State Street west across the river; State becomes West State, and Court Street is the second right after Wyman.
- Parking. Surface lot at Winnebago and Mulberry, a block north; garages at State & Church and the Concourse Garage on North Church. Street parking on Court and Mulberry is hit or miss during court hours.
- Courthouse entrance. While the old Public Safety Building is being rebuilt, the courthouse’s public entrance is on Elm Street, one block south of State. If you’re meeting us around a court date, allow a few extra minutes.

Why a Downtown Office Matters for Your Case
Most of the paperwork in a Rockford injury case runs through buildings within a few blocks of here.
- Your lawsuit, if one is needed, is filed with the Winnebago County Circuit Clerk at 400 W. State St. (civil filings, Room 108). Being next door means we’re in and out of that building constantly.
- Your police crash report comes from the Rockford Police Department’s Records Center. You can buy it online through BuyCrash for about $15, or request it by mail from the Records Center at 557 S. New Towne Dr. for $5 once it’s been about ten working days since the crash. If the crash was outside city limits, it’s the Winnebago County Sheriff at 650 W. State St. We handle this for our clients; you don’t need to chase it.
- The hospitals. If you were taken to UW Health SwedishAmerican on East State or OSF Saint Anthony out by the interstate, we know those billing offices and how their liens work. West-side families should know the old Mercyhealth hospital on Rockton Avenue no longer runs an emergency room, so most west-side crash patients now go to SwedishAmerican or Javon Bea on Riverside.
The Streets Where We See the Most Serious Crashes
The City of Rockford’s traffic safety study, which looked at six years of state crash data, found that a handful of corridors account for a large share of the fatal and serious-injury crashes in town. Several are on the south and west sides: Kishwaukee Street between Brooke Road and Harrison Avenue, 11th Street, Springfield Avenue from Montague Road to South Main, Broadway, and Charles Street. Older intersection data put South Main at US-20 and South Main at Meridian on the list too.
If you were hurt on one of those roads, the crash pattern on that stretch can matter to your case. It’s one of the things we look at early.
How an Illinois Injury Case Usually Works
Here’s the short version. Every case is different, and we’ll walk you through yours in person.
The deadline. In Illinois you generally have two years from the date of the injury to file a personal injury lawsuit (735 ILCS 5/13-202), and two years from the date of death for a wrongful death case (740 ILCS 180/2). Some situations are shorter, especially claims against a city or county. Don’t wait on this one.
Fault. Illinois uses modified comparative fault. If you were partly at fault, your recovery is reduced by your share. If you’re found more than 50% at fault, you recover nothing (735 ILCS 5/2-1116). Insurance adjusters know this rule well, which is why what you say in the first few days matters.
Insurance limits. Illinois only requires drivers to carry $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash in bodily injury coverage (625 ILCS 5/7-203). A serious injury blows through that fast. We look for every available policy, including your own underinsured motorist coverage, before anyone talks numbers.
Wrongful death. Since August 2023, Illinois allows punitive damages in wrongful death cases where the conduct warrants it, something that wasn’t available before. It changed how trucking and drunk-driving death cases are valued.
No health insurance? Call anyway. Illinois Medicaid has helped many of our uninsured clients get treated. The rules are tightening: for applications filed on or after January 1, 2027, Medicaid will cover fewer months of bills from before the application date than it does today. If you’re hurt and uninsured, applying promptly matters more than ever.
What a Few of Our Clients Received
Paul Marriett was counsel of record on each of these:
- $18,000,000 for a client who suffered a brain injury
- $5,000,000 for a patient dropped while being transported by ambulance
- $3,000,000 in policy limits for the family of a young man killed by a commercial trucking carrier
- $500,000 for the family of a child killed in a wrongful death case
- $250,000 for a child injured while riding a Razor scooter
- $250,000 for an ATV rollover
- $198,000 for a shopper injured in a fall at a grocery store
- $100,000 for a rear-end crash
- $50,000, the full policy limit, for a client whose only treatment was a single emergency room visit, after State Farm first offered $1,500
Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome in any future case. Every case depends on its own facts.
